Good news for fans of the District of Columbia. I’ve just received word that in its longstanding rivalry with New York City*, Washington has finally, decisively been named the better municipality.
Yes! The all-important 2009 Mercer quality of life ratings for world cities have just been released, and D.C. finished in an impressive 44th place. New York, meanwhile, was relegated to a pathetic 49th. I take this to be unequivocal proof that the District is better than NYC in every way. And lest you doubt our level of dominance, check out the separate rankings for city infrastructure: New York, 32nd place; Washington, 24th.
Huzzah!
Now, just because we’ve defeated New York doesn’t mean that D.C.’s fight for top (U.S.) city is over. A quick glance at the rankings shows that we’re still behind Portland, Boston, San Francisco, and Honolulu (because of the Obama Factor.) But, I’m confidant that by continuing with its basic civic-improvement strategy (more Smartbike, less public urination), the District will be well on its way to showing those left-coast hippies who’s boss.
The new D.C.-Portland rivalry officially begins now.
*New York is not actually aware of this rivalry.
you can tell a good rivalry by who knows about it. just like that kansas/iowa state rivalry. that’s one for the history books.
All I’m saying is, numbers don’t lie, Brianna.
By the way, enjoy your subway rats and fare hikes!
