In which we review a local establishment’s French fries. Because it’s Friday, which sorta sounds like “Fries Day,” and there’s a whole weekend of French fries-eating ahead of you.

Place: 1409 Playbill Cafe, 1409 14th St. NW
Menu Says: Sweet Potato Fries
Price: $2.99
This fries-eating opportunity came about somewhat unintentionally. We had just been meaning to stop in for a quick dinner, no fry consumption necessarily intended. Luckily for the sake of this Very Important column, Playbill offers several varieties of french fries to go along with their sandwiches, including the very tasty sweet potato variant that I chose and is pictured above.
I give the sweet potato fries high marks. Their thickness was pretty much just how I like it, and they were very thoroughly fried without being too crispy or flavorless. Which is to say that on the too fried <-> undercooked continuum, these leaned to the well done side, but had enough spice/flavoring to give them plenty of taste. Overall, a solidly above average sweet potato french fry. Recommended!
As for the rest of Playbill’s fare, all I can say is don’t order the veggie burger if you don’t like “grill” flavoring. We are of the opinion that a veggie burger should not try to taste like a real hamburger. The results can be somewhat…off-putting.
overall, playbill has some damn good food selections. sayed and mother run a great operation there!
