In which we review a local establishment’s French fries. Because it’s Friday, which sorta sounds like “Fries Day,” and there’s a whole weekend of French fries-eating ahead of you.

Place: Good Stuff Eatery, 303 Pennsylvania Ave SE
Menu Says: “Spike’s Village Fries, topped with fresh thyme, rosemary & cracked pepper.”
Price: $3.79 for the large size.
Good Stuff pretty much had to be the second destination for our new Friday Fries Day column after a couple of our friends raved poetically about the thyme-sprinkled sticks of potatoey goodness (my words, not theirs). And I’ll admit, Good Stuff delivered our friends’ promises of fried zen, though I think next time I’d order the more traditional Sunny’s Handcut Fries (to me, thyme=meh). The funky dipping options (Old Bay mayo, mango mayo) are nice, though I’m somewhat of a traditionalist and stuck with ketchup. But still, embarrassingly, at one point during our fries feast, I actually muttered, “Mmmm. Good stuff.” Enough said.
(Sidenote: Good Stuff’s “Vegetarians are People Too ‘Shroom Burger” is amay-zing. And I don’t usually like portobello mushrooms.)
I like the non-thyme fries better too. BUT, don’t dip with ketchup. Slather your fries and burger with Sriracha mayo. It’s spicy heaven.
Try the fries at Lola’s on 8th (across from the Marine barracks). They are thin, crispy and really garlicky. Yum!
I’m not a huge fan of thin and crispy fries, but we’ll add Lola’s to our list! Thanks for the tip.
Glad ya’ll tried out Good Stuff – without a doubt one of my favorite places in DC. And for any carnivores out there like me, their burgers are outstanding as well.
sweet!!! I’m so glad you went and enjoyed the fries! next time i promise i’m going to try the portabello mushroom burger…the bacon cheeseburger just usually distracts me. :)
nice picture, too
