NEW COLUMN ALERT: In which we review a local establishment’s French fries. Because it’s Friday, which sorta sounds like “Fries Day,” and there’s a whole weekend of French fries-eating ahead of you.

Place: Cork Wine Bar, 1720 14th St., NW
Menu Says: “French Fries tossed with parsley, garlic, lemon, house-made ketchup”
Price: $5
So, we’ve tried these twice. The first time was just after Cork opened, and our waitress made the lofty claim that their fries were “the best in the city.” We thought that was awfully pretentious for a place that had just opened—and a wine bar, at that, not exactly the most likely suspect for such a coveted title—and were pretty underwhelmed by the thin, too-crispy fries and weird curry-flavored homemade ketchup.
But! We’re dedicated fries fans, so we tried them again last night. They were better, but still solidly in middle-of-the-pack territory (tasty, but not amazing). The curry was less pronounced, and the fries were thicker—but, alas, tasted too fried and not, er, potatoey enough. And not really worth $5, even though the portion was admittedly pretty generous and enough for four of us to share.
