My slow march towards Suzy Homemaker territory has suffered a setback: Exquisite Fabrics, my favorite local fabric shop—and the only one I know of within walking distance—has shuttered as of last weekend. Totally lame!
Now, let me be clear: It wasn’t just laziness that drew me to Exquisite Fabrics. Cached on K Street, the shop had this awesome Old World feel (think perpetual opera music, the same stern-but-friendly couple always working) that was infinitely more satisfying than the dime-a-dozen chains I know from Iowa, with their rows of quilters fabric and clueless teenage employees.
Specializing in couture and designer fabric, the shop also always had a nice stock of slashed-price textiles (from about $5 a yard) for cheapos like me.
Of course, this sad tale for me has silver lining for others: Exquisite Fabrics is merely ditching their admittedly terrible K Street location for a prime space in the deeper-pocketed land of Georgetown. Starting Jan. 2nd or 3rd, you can find them in their new digs in Georgetown Park Mall (across from J. Crew). No word on what other changes might be in store, but I’m holding my breath the $5 table and opera music persevere.
But really—Georgetown? That’s a whole bus ride away! Like I needed another excuse to neglect my sewing habit.
hey! i used to be one of those teenage workers at the chain store! I wasn’t clueless or dime a dozen.
