Like many cash-strapped couples before us, Noah and I like us a good cheap date (as in activities, not new love interests).
In this city, “cheap” can be awfully subjective; but for us, that equates to something along the lines of sharing a six-pack of Stella sitting outside Dupont Corner Market or half-price pizza at Cafe Luna. While both can make for a nice outing, neither are particularly, uh, classy.
But last night, we were in rare form and headed to Penn Quarter for dinner (Oyamel) and a show (“Boom” at Woolly Mammoth). And even though the occasion was funded by a cash-money gift from my parents, I’m impressed that the total price tag was a reasonable $101. I mean, that’s definitely more than we usually spend for a night out, but we’re talking dinner, drinks, two theater tickets, and a cab ride home to Logan Circle.
The main reason we were able to swing such an awesome deal is that Woolly Mammoth offers $15 balcony tickets to 25-and-under theater-goers. And at Woolly, a balcony ticket is still a prime perch (our seats were front and center). This is the second time we’ve taken advantage of the offering, and both shows have been excellent. And of course, I’m sure we could have dropped a lot more cash at Oyamel, but we weren’t particularly starving and were satisfied after drinks, tableside-prepared guacamole, and three vegetarian tapas.
But the best part? We got to revel in smugness after a night out at a trendy restaurant and one of D.C.’s hipper theater houses. And that, my friends, is priceless.

i hate to brag, but my girlfriend and i were able to get free tickets to the show at woolly yesterday. pays to have connections here and there. what did you think of the show?
Well, free trumps cheap, I suppose. I thought the show was great; Barbara and her levers were hilarious. What did you think?
wow – good thing it was 25 and under and not just under 25, huh Noah? ;)
also, i’d like to see district, schmistrict blog a little more about New York. probably should go there for more material. say, in January?
Hey, what’s this I hear that New Haven is the really happen’ place?
i liked it. the phrase i used to describe the show to my girlfriend afterward was “difficult, but not in a bad way”. i liked it, but there were times when i felt that you really had to invest a lot of effort to stay with it (not necessarily a bad thing, if you ask me).
i thought barbara was going to turn out to be jo’s daughter or something. guess not!
I saw Boom too. Fun show and my first time at Woolly! . . . another good way to score free theatre tickets is to volunteer/usher. A few evenings of help = free seat :) . . . Just happens that my old boss works in development there now.
