As I was walking home yesterday, I noticed that the Washington Times costs 50¢. I laughed at the irony, because six months ago when the Post raised its price to 50¢ (from 35¢), the Times festooned all of their newspaper boxes with triumphant signs (printed on luxurious 8.5×11 copier paper) announcing that it was “STILL ONLY $0.25.”
Whenever I saw one of these tiny declarations of populism, I would think ”Yeah, that’s about right,” the Times being an unreadable conservative mouthpiece, after all. And as someone with what some might call an unnatural affinity for gumballs, the comparison of relative value between the two commodities was natural. Gumballs won every time.
And now the Times wants to charge two gumballs for their paper? I’m sorry, but I just don’t think so. If I’m feeling the need for the unique mix of Fox News and 11th grade investigative reporting that the Washington Times provides, I’ll just have Brit Hume read me the USA Today. All the while enjoying my delicious red sphere of chewy goodness.
