Columbia Heights Day is this Saturday, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go. Wasn’t sure, that is, until I saw the day’s schedule via New Columbia Heights. The page features three little words that spoke to the very core of my being: “Cupcake eating contest.”
HOLY CRAP AWESOME.
And it’s sponsored by Sticky Fingers. ARE YOU [...]

Add this to the to-do list: DIY District map

I’ve been pretty excited that Apartment Therapy finally launched a D.C. site recently, no longer resigning the D.C. content to live on New York’s site (I mean really, how embarrassing!). And though I haven’t been overly enthused by the content so far, I’m totally smitten with this DIY map project.
The creator found a panoramic photo [...]
Shaw wants you to read a book for once

The new Shaw Library. This is an issue that I’ve half-followed for a few months now, with definite but not intense interest. The gist of the situation seems to be that Shaw needs a new library branch to replace its former Brutalist eyesore of a building that had fallen into disrepair. Back in 2007, architects showed plans for [...]
Crafty Bastards!!

This Sunday marks my favorite festival in D.C., Crafty Bastards. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Marie Reed Learning Center on 18th Street will transform into a crafty paradise. Think weird felted monsters, handmade cigar-box guitars, a sweet breakdance competition, “The Office”-themed purses, badass jewelry, and, in Noah’s words, “more knitting than your grandma’s [...]
WMATA heeds the call of short people everywhere

As I stepped onto the Metro yesterday after a hard day working in the service of my government, I noticed a new addition to the usual drab interior of the car. Bright yellow straps hung from the center poll like some sort of transit-oriented playground apparatus. And while the straps did seem perfectly spaced for some [...]
Big Bear Coffee Buzz

When the dust finally settled after moving here 16 months ago, one of the first missions I embarked on was to discover a favorite coffee shop in my new home. I started optimistic, thinking certainly Washington’s glut of type As must harbor some serious java addictions.
But to be honest, I was pretty much dismayed at [...]
Random Friday Rant: Brooklyn’s Ethanol Co-op

On a totally irrelevant aside, I’d like to draw your attention to the latest über-crunchy initiative from everyone’s favorite yuppie enclave to hate: Park Slope, Brooklyn. This week, two Slope activists proposed launching an ethanol fuel co-op in the style of the neighborhood’s popular food co-op.
Now, the idea is of course intriguing. And being from [...]
Emergency in Maryland! Call your congressman!*

Reading through the Examiner today, I game across some grave news. So very grave, in fact, that I may have disturbed my fellow park lunchers with my distraught cries:
“Montgomery County NOOOOO!!”
It seems that certain over zealous health inspectors are looking to restrict the time-honored practice of giving out free samples at the farmers market. Something [...]
