This incredible photo set was featured on DCist a while ago, but it’s totally worth exposing to anyone who missed it the first time around. I was reminded of it by a similar endeavor involving European landmarks and kitschy souvenirs (tri-colored Eiffel Tower statues, mini red phone booths) that was featured recently on Prêt à Voyager, a Baltimore-based travel & design blog that I’m a big fan of.
But here in D.C., money is power, so who needs whimsical plastic crap when you can use cold hard cash instead, right? But hey, at least these monuments are free to visit.
Though photographer Brendan McKeon is actually from Seattle and created the above masterpieces while in town for a convention, he drew a surprisingly refreshing conclusion from his trip. As parlayed on his Flickr page: “DC is one of those mythic places—a bit like Vegas, actually—where the thing it’s most famous for is not really representative of the city itself or where ‘real’ people live.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
