Cruising ’round the neighborhood recently, I’ve seen a ton of signs like the one shown on the right. For the non-initiated, this might seem like a weird thing to find in the District, which famously has absolutely no voting representation in the federal government, and certainly no Senators.
BUT, D.C. does hilariously have a shadow delegation consisting of two Shadow Senators and a Shadow Representative. These (real) people are elected through a process including primaries and party affiliations, just like a real state! Honestly, sometimes it’s like I’m a full blown U.S. citizen, living here.
Anyway, the weird Batman overtones weren’t the reason I wanted to talk about D.C.’s awesomest elected officials. Mainly, I wanted to draw attention to this sweet series of videos produced by a bartender at Marx Cafe in Mt. Pleasant. Basically, the guy got an actor to play a pretend candidate for Shadow Senator. Says the fake candidate: “Who better to not represent people who do not exist than a candidate that does not exist.”
So here we have a guy making videos featuring an actor portraying a non-real candidate for a non-voting position in the D.C. government. Which is called a “Shadow Senator.” I love this city.
Note: Unfortunately, it looks like the commercial maker is a Ron Paul Libertarian, meaning he’s crazy and has reprehensible politics. But don’t let that detract from your enjoyment of the videos.
reprehensible and detract in the same paragraph, I love this writer.
